- Fotomontajes / Photo Edits
"Fotomontajes" is an ongoing series of software multi-exposures. They follow an earlier catalog, initially composed of images I posted on Instagram.
Tenía una cuenta Instagram ("@dosflange") en los 2022-24, donde estaba experimentando con ese tipo de fotos. Es así como empezaron mis "fotomontajes".
How are these made? ¿Cómo se hacen?
These images are all based on photos from my archive. Most of the useful ones don't actually have a subject; often I am just looking for patterns of light.
Cell phone pictures will do, but I prefer "real" cameras. If I do film photography, I develop the film myself using a dark-bag and rotation cylinder. Doing them yourself is nice because you have control over the chemistry and processing.
Then I choose one or two main images which determine the overall idea of that particular creation. They become the first layer in my editing program. I keep adding images above or below them and blend them together.
As the "stack" of layers grows, I experiment with different ways of making the images merge and interact with each other. I dial in more or less of each layer, or let through only certain parts, so that the textures, shapes, and details appear only where and how I prefer to see them in the final image.

Estas imágenes son hechas a base de fótos. A veces mi celular ya está suficiente, otras veces tomo una cámara "grande" o de película. Si son rollos de película los revelo yo mismo. El tipo de película y los químicos del revelado pueden darle un toque interesante a la imagen.
Muchas veces tengo ya in mente una foto principal, que va a ser la base de mi composición. A partir de ahí voy agregando otras fotografías, encima o debajo de la imagen principal, como si fueran capas. El juego es de experimentar con distintas formas de hacer que se mezclen entre sí las capas ("blend modes"), y donde las texturas, las formas y los detalles aparezcan.
Así, las imágenes empiezan a dialogar entre sí y terminan, con un poco de suerte! formando la imagen final que estaba buscando.
Todo eso quizás suene muy complejo. Puse algunos ejemplos para mostrar cómo funciona en la práctica.
Taking Photos
I've kept most of my cameras over the decades, including hand-me-downs from my family, so I have a bunch of them by now. This photo shows the ones I currently use most often: Firstly, a Pentax K-1 DSLR. You could probably use it as a hammer, too, without damaging it. Then a much older Pentax model, a fully manual MX (35-mm), which has the same lense mount than the digital one. And a Seagull 4A (medium format). It takes square photos and it has a very quiet shutter, which I like very much. The MX literally has this loud, wet slapping sound when the mirror comes down.
