Hello! The first post in my “non-technical” blog is about a website I have been building in September.

Picwok.com is a home for my clonebrush-paintings, where people can search my catalog by various criteria, and where they can buy high-quality prints in a more formal/commercial way than over here.

Creating the website has given me a way to review the logistics of my picture collection in more detail than I had planned. But it was worth it: How can I let the program know where my pictures are, what their name is, what happens if I create a new version? How does the website know how to slice and dice the catalog and handle descriptions in multiple languages?

I won’t bore you with details, but the process helped me structure my work-flow and be able to scale my creative work, as opposed to drown in chaos when I edit more images.

The most important question – which kind of led to many others – actually was, how can I make sure that a customer gets the exact file/version of the image printed that they ordered; I couldn’t just keep editing away on a photo and risk having it look quite differently than the one on preview at the website. And having a bunch of similarly named image files in a folder is not orderly enough. So this is sorted now.

Having the website now also means, that the “Photo-Edits” series here on the “Tidings” website will become more quiet. I do think I will add to it from time to time, tidbits about the images that would be out-of-place in a commercial setting.

But the new site is definitely better for discovering and browsing the pictures than the old ways, mostly because Picwok is a dynamic website, rather than this static one, which does have advantages
 sometimes.
